The Pat Flannery Golf Classic has donated the funds raised from this year’s golf outing to the Limerick Marine Search & Rescue.
More than 5,000 Euro was presented to members of the Limerick Marine Search & Rescue at their headquarters on the Dock Road on Friday, October 14. The funds will help continue the great service, which is completely volunteer based, for Limerick and part of the Shannon Region.
“This donation will help keep the operation going, keep boats in the water, keep the lads in the right equipment and keep people safe,” said a very grateful Joe Morgan, Chairman of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue.
The Pat Flannery Golf Classic took place in September, where over 100 participants played a competitive round of golf in teams of three. Organisers of the Golf Classic set an aim to break the five thousand mark on this year’s donation, having raised over 4,000 Euro in previous years for Milford Hospice and Temple Street Hospital. The final sum raised by the Golf classic was 5,225 Euro.
On the evening, the organisers of the Pat Flannery Golf Classic were given a tour of the premises which boasts training rooms, garage, rec room and sleeping quarters. Ger Madden, a Pat Flannery Golf Classic organiser was delighted with the decision to donate to the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue:
“After we have seen the facility here, and how well the place is run, I am very happy the donation is going here,” he said, before adding, “We are confident the money will be put to good use.”
“Ger Punch approached me in Flannery’s Pub three years ago, my son passed away, he asked me if the lads and I would be interested in running a golf classic in his memory,” said Mr Madden.
Ger Madden added the golf classic was founded in memory of Stuart Madden, John Sheedy and Gary Keehan, the brother of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue volunteer, Karen Keehan.
Limerick Marine Search and Rescue was established in 1986 by Jimmy Connors and Tony Cusack who were both sports divers at the time. They were asked to help search for a young boy who had lost his life in the waters of Parteen. The two men decided afterwards that there was a necessity for a Marine, Search and Rescue unit in Limerick. Following a meeting on December 6, 1986, in Ger Fahey’s bar on the Dock Road (now Dolans), Limerick Marine Search and Rescue was established.
To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Joe Morgan, Chairman of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue, has organised a Black Tie Ball fundraiser at the Limerick Strand Hotel on Friday, October 21. Guests will be welcomed with a drinks reception, a delicious 3-course meal, a live auction and some amazing entertainment on the night. Tickets are still available for the event.
